KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 — Terengganu recorded 53 underage marriages involving female teenagers between 2022 and 2024, with Kemaman leading at 15 cases, followed by Besut with 13. State Committee Chair for Welfare, Women, Family, and National Unity, Maliaman Kassim, attributed the marriages to factors such as preventing issues like out-of-wedlock pregnancies and promiscuity. He noted that many of the teenagers involved were no longer attending school, and marriage was perceived as a solution to potential social problems. The statistics were disclosed in response to an inquiry during the State Legislative Assembly sitting regarding underage marriage rates among female children.
