A British woman, Simone White, 28, has died after consuming methanol-laced alcohol in Laos, becoming the fifth foreign tourist to succumb in the incident. The victims, including an Australian, two Danes, and an American, drank the contaminated alcohol in Vang Vieng, a popular backpacker destination. Counterfeit and home-made spirits are a known issue in Laos, prompting warnings from governments like Britain and Australia. British authorities are supporting White’s family and liaising with local officials.
