Putrajaya is moving to amend the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) to empower police to access user data from social media platforms. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching announced in the Dewan Rakyat that the proposed amendment, expected in December, introduces a section granting enforcement authorities the ability to compel platform providers to disclose user data. This measure aims to streamline police investigations by ensuring access to critical information. Teo emphasized the importance of this enhancement in enforcement powers, believing it will address challenges in obtaining digital evidence and bolster efforts to combat online-related crimes effectively.
