More Singaporeans are being prescribed antidepressants

In Singapore, the use of antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), has risen steadily, with around 53,000 patients prescribed yearly in 2022 and 2023. Among young adults aged 18 to 24, prescriptions grew from 11.2% in 2017 to 14% in 2022, driven partly by destigmatisation of mental health issues. Doctors noted an increase in young people seeking help post-pandemic, demonstrating heightened self-awareness about their symptoms and triggers. Ms. Ashley Poo, 24, experienced severe side effects when starting SSRIs at 19 but persisted with treatment, reflecting growing acceptance of anti-depressants as vital tools in mental health care.
