GEORGE TOWN, Dec 4 — The High Court ruled that remarks made by Kepala Batas MP Siti Mastura Muhammad, linking Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng, and Teresa Kok to Communist Party of Malaya leader Chin Peng and Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, were defamatory and malicious.
Judge Datuk Quay Chew Soon awarded damages of RM300,000 to Lim Kit Siang, RM250,000 to Lim Guan Eng, and RM200,000 to Teresa Kok. Siti Mastura’s defences, including fair comment and qualified privilege, were rejected, and an injunction was issued to prevent her from making similar remarks in the future.
Defamation Case
The judge found her statements baseless and reckless, highlighting her reliance on an unverified publication as evidence. Despite her academic credentials, Siti Mastura used an unverifiable campaign book with no author, publisher, or ISBN. The remarks, which exposed the plaintiffs to public hatred, were deemed politically motivated and made in bad faith.
