Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil criticized Meta Inc. for its lack of accountability over RM432 million lost by Malaysians to scams on Facebook in 2023. He described Meta’s response as heartless, highlighting how the platform failed to act swiftly on takedown requests for scam and illegal gambling content, despite receiving 170,000 such requests. Fahmi cited delays, including a six-month response to a Health Ministry complaint about fake medical accounts, as evidence of Meta’s unresponsiveness. Despite industry opposition, Malaysia plans to enforce social media licensing from January 2025, aiming to hold platforms accountable for enabling scams and illegal activities.
