The Communication and Multimedia Act (Amendment) Bill narrowly passed the Committee Stage in Malaysia’s Parliament with a 19-vote majority. Bloc voting, initiated by the Opposition, highlighted the absence of many MPs, with only 120 of 222 present. Despite opposition from rights groups and concerns over digital freedoms and privacy, the Bill passed its third reading unamended. The Dewan Rakyat Speaker delayed proceedings to allow more government MPs to vote, ensuring the Bill’s approval. Some MPs called the bill, ‘Akta Sakit Hati’ and legendary Malaysian cartoonist Fahmi Reza is hitting Madani hard with cartoons on the akta.
