Former minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin confirmed that Malaysia’s decision to withdraw its application to review the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) 2008 ruling on Pulau Batu Puteh was discussed during a 2018 cabinet meeting under the Pakatan Harapan administration. Zuraida, then housing and local government minister, revealed that the matter was presented by then-prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Her statement comes amid Mahathir’s recent comments criticizing the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) investigating the Pulau Batu Puteh case, where he questioned the necessity of revisiting the issue and suggested the commission’s establishment was politically motivated.
