The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) has criticized Malaysia’s Madani government for failing to deliver on promises of reform, particularly in safeguarding freedom of expression. In its 2024 report, CIJ revealed that authorities invoked repressive laws 187 times between January and November, with the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act being the most frequently used.

CIJ highlighted concerns about restrictive measures like the Online Safety Bill and amendments to the CMA, which it said could overly regulate digital spaces. CIJ urged the government to repeal repressive laws, establish a Malaysian Media Council, and enact a Right to Information Act to protect press freedom and public access to information.
