KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s quest for a semi-final spot in the 2024 ASEAN Cup hit a snag after a 1-0 defeat to defending champions Thailand in a Group A match at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium.
The loss continued Malaysia’s winless streak in Thailand for this tournament since its inception in 1996, with seven losses in eight away matches.
Swedish-born striker Patrik Gustavsson secured the winner in the 57th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Malaysian goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli.
The result propelled the Thai squad to the top of Group A with six points, alongside Singapore, while Malaysia sits third with four points.
