A dead whale found in Batang Lupar, Sri Aman, Sarawak, has been identified as a Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis), marking the first confirmed record of the species in Sarawak waters, according to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC). The discovery was confirmed through DNA testing by SFC’s biodiversity conservation division. The decomposed carcass was first spotted near Pulau Seduku on Nov 19 and later found stuck near the Triso Bridge construction site. This discovery adds to Sarawak’s marine mammal records, which include Bryde’s, Sperm, Fin, Minke, and Humpback whales, bringing the total to 25 species documented in its waters.
