Government Steps Up Efforts to Curb Rising Motorcycle Fatalities

The Malaysian government is intensifying efforts to curb motorcycle-related fatalities, which make up nearly 65% of road accident deaths annually. Transport Minister Anthony Loke highlighted new initiatives, including stricter licensing regulations and awareness campaigns in schools and youth programs to promote safe riding habits. Recognizing the role of unlicensed riders in accidents, Loke stressed the need for compliance alongside education.

Additionally, the government is enhancing public transport, including expanding the Demand Ride Transit (DRT) service with 300 new vans to provide safer alternatives to motorcycles. These measures aim to reduce reliance on motorcycles and foster a culture of road safety.
