The number of couples marrying in southern Thailand has decreased by 40% since Malaysia tightened border controls on December 1. Last year, over 300 Malaysian couples married in Narathiwat, mostly men aged 30 and above seeking polygamous marriages.
Malaysian Border Controls Impact Southern Thailand Marriages
Daily registrations fell from 4-5 couples to 1-2. Many now go directly to Songkhla province. The Narathiwat Islamic Religious Council, which has 30 marriage committee members, urges the Malaysian Consulate in Songkhla to process marriage documents within a day. The decline follows Malaysia’s ban on cross-border use of illegal bases.
