Taiwan court upholds death sentence of man who killed Malaysian student

1 min read

The Taiwan High Court Kaohsiung Branch upheld the death sentence for Liang Yu-chih, convicted of raping and murdering a Malaysian student in 2020. Liang abducted the victim near her school in Tainan, then raped, strangled, and brutally killed her before dumping her body in Kaohsiung’s Alian District. The court cited his premeditated actions, extreme cruelty, and high risk of reoffending. It marks Taiwan’s first death sentence under revised constitutional guidelines for the most heinous crimes. The case dates back to Oct. 28, 2020, when Liang attacked a Malaysian student walking alone through an underpass, court documents from the most recent trial showed.
