KUALA LUMPUR – Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) increased its fees on January 1, 2025, amid rising living costs, raising concerns about healthcare affordability. Specialist consultation fees surged from RM15 to RM50, while ward admission charges for single adult rooms jumped from RM120 to RM300 per day.

Patients like J. Pang, a 49-year-old cancer survivor, worry about affording follow-up care. “With no fixed income, I may cut back on appointments,” she shared. UMMC’s rates now surpass many government hospitals, intensifying fears of increased pressure on already strained public facilities as lower-income patients seek alternatives.
