DAP MP Lim Lip Eng has clarified that police can only check mobile phones if there is an ongoing investigation or a lodged police report against the individual, as confirmed in a parliamentary reply on July 28, 2022. This counters Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain’s recent statement that officers ranked inspector or higher may inspect phones if there is suspicion of criminal activity.

Lim emphasized that random phone checks are not permissible. Lawyers for Liberty also urged police to educate officers and the public on the proper legal conditions, ensuring compliance with Section 23(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
