Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended the decision to ease prison conditions for former premier Najib Razak, convicted in the 1MDB scandal. Speaking to the Financial Times, Anwar stated there was no need for vindictiveness, recalling his own harsh prison experience. “Do I need to treat Najib in the same manner? No, he was prime minister,” he said. However, Anwar maintained a firm stance against corruption, emphasizing that he could not forgive public funds theft under any predecessor, including Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Anwar, who survived assault during his imprisonment, added, “I’ve forgiven personal grievances but stolen billions must be returned.”
