After 111 years, Hup Teck, a historic soy sauce factory in Gopeng, has closed its doors due to a lack of successors. Owner Low Bak Tong, 72, inherited the business from his father but now finds the physically demanding work too exhausting. Despite his dedication, neither his sisters nor nephew can take over. With no one to continue the labor-intensive traditional craft, the family business fades into history, joining other vanishing trades. “This was our family business,” Bak Tong lamented, but age and changing times have forced its end, marking the loss of another piece of Malaysia’s heritage.
