Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has suggested amending laws to allow peaceful assemblies without requiring lengthy approvals. He proposed designating specific areas where gatherings could take place without prior approval, though organizers would still need to notify the police for security purposes. His statement follows criticism over alleged government restrictions on the Jan 25 anti-graft rally. Saifuddin emphasized that the right to assemble is enshrined in the Federal Constitution and remains protected. He clarified that police statements on regulations do not mean assemblies are banned but are meant to ensure security and compliance with existing laws.
