Malaysia’s Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) is seeking to block former prime minister Najib Razak’s bid for house arrest, filing a motion on February 4 to appeal a court decision allowing him to pursue the petition. The AGC aims to take the case to the Federal Court, citing conflicting legal interpretations. Najib, jailed for 1MDB-related crimes, had his 12-year sentence halved in 2024 through royal leniency, sparking criticism. The AGC stressed that blocking his bid is essential to uphold justice, constitutional supremacy, and legal clarity. The Court of Appeal previously ruled that Najib’s house arrest plea could be heard.
