Civil society group Aliran has urged the government to reduce Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) expenditures, particularly the high benefits for top officials, instead of raising electricity tariffs for industries. The group expressed concern that increased costs would be passed on to consumers, worsening inflation. TNB’s profits rose significantly, with a net profit of RM3.74 billion in 2024, up 71.2% year-on-year. Aliran also criticized the directors’ pay and urged TNB to review its agreements with independent power producers to cut costs. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated any tariff hikes would be carefully considered to protect businesses and households.
