Pakatan Harapan has backtracked on its election promise to amend the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010, which would have allowed whistleblowers to approach the media. Despite pledging reforms in GE15, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended the existing provision, arguing that public disclosures could unfairly condemn the accused before investigations. Minister Azalina Othman Said reinforced the stance, stating Malaysia is “not there yet” in allowing media disclosures. This reversal contradicts Harapan’s manifesto, which emphasized transparency and integrity in combating corruption. Critics see it as a clear U-turn, undermining earlier commitments to strengthen whistleblower protections and government accountability.
