Penang, famous for its food, has been labeled Malaysia’s “fat” state due to its 56.5% obesity rate, surpassing the national average of 54.4%. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad reported higher rates of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Khairi Mohd Zainol attributed these issues to Penang’s calorie-dense foods. He suggested healthier cooking methods and nutrition education. Malaysian Diabetes Educators Society president, Yong Lai Mee, highlighted the link between obesity and diabetes, stressing the need for awareness and effective diabetes management to reduce health risks.
