The Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional alliance risks losing support in Sabah and Sarawak if a snap election is called, as growing discontent over religious overreach intensifies. Activist Johan Ariffin Samad warns that the controversial Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024 has heightened fears of Islamisation, clashing with Borneo’s firm stance on religious freedom. Sabah’s 20-point agreement originally ensured Islamisation would not apply to the state, but many now see federal policies as a betrayal. With religion being weaponised for political gain, the PH-BN coalition may struggle in East Malaysia, where inclusivity and autonomy remain paramount to voters.
