SHAH ALAM – Former Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar has warned that Malays in urban areas could be gradually displaced if the Urban Renewal Act is passed. He claims the proposed law contradicts existing legislation, such as the National Land Code and Strata Title Act, which currently require 100% resident approval for redevelopment. In contrast, the new act lowers this requirement. While the government assures that the law will protect property owners and ensure sustainable urban development, Noh fears it may negatively impact Malays in cities, recalling past struggles after the 1969 riots.
