KUALA LUMPUR – Former Malaysian ambassador Nazri Aziz reaffirmed his support for the Sedition Act, arguing that limits on free speech are necessary to prevent racial and sectarian riots. In an interview, he cited controversial preacher Zakir Naik, saying the law should be used against irresponsible speech. His remarks follow criticism from the Global Human Rights Federation after Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed the gag order on Zakir Naik has been lifted. The federation warned that Zakir’s past remarks on non-Islamic religions threaten Malaysia’s plural society and urged stronger action to protect minority sensitivities.
