An activist has urged the Sarawak government to ban Islamic preacher Dr. Zakir Naik from entering the state to protect religious harmony. Global Human Rights Federation deputy president Peter John Jaban said Naik’s past remarks against Chinese and Hindu communities could incite tensions. He emphasized that Sarawak has its own respected Islamic scholars and does not need foreign preachers spreading discord. Naik remains wanted in India for alleged money laundering and hate speech.
Reinstate ban
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Advancement Party (MAP) and Hindraf demand accountability from the home minister over lifting restrictions on Zakir Naik. They question its impact on state rulers’ bans, reassessment of Naik’s security threat, and implications for Malaysia’s diverse society, which includes 45% non-Muslims whose concerns are being ignored.
