Shanghai-born Lauren Dai is among 26,162 mainland Chinese who obtained Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) visas as of December 2024, making up 45% of the scheme’s participants. Drawn by Malaysia’s affordable living, relaxed lifestyle, and education opportunities, many Chinese nationals are escaping China’s competitive “neijuan” culture. Despite stricter MM2H requirements in 2024, including higher fixed deposits and property purchase obligations, applications from China remain high. The scheme generated US$152.8 million in fixed deposits and RM681 million in property investments between September 2024 and January 2025.
