Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad criticized the proposed Urban Renewal Act, claiming it would disproportionately displace Malays and weaken their political power. He argued that using Singapore as a model would result in Malays being evicted from urban areas, similar to what happened in the island republic. Mahathir warned that the redevelopment would force Malays to rural areas, widening the economic gap between communities and hindering racial unity. In Singapore, he says, the Malay kampungs were taken over and Malays were sent to live among non-Muslims, thus diminishing their political voices. The proposal has sparked backlash, with PAS Youth comparing the potential displacement to the plight of Palestinians and planning a protest rally against the bill.
