PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan has urged the Madani government to take firm action against those within its own ranks who disrupt religious harmony, warning that failure to do so will only deepen public distrust.
Quoting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent warning that strict measures would be taken against anyone insulting religion, Takiyuddin stressed that PAS upholds Islam’s dignity while also valuing national unity. However, he noted growing skepticism about the government’s political will to defend Islam and act impartially.
“PAS believes that the government cannot simply adopt an approach of blaming others or merely issuing denials to evade responsibility,” he said.
Religious Tensions
He warned that without firm, transparent, and fair action, the negative perceptions and social unrest will “become fertile ground for vested interests to ‘sow the wind’, potentially leading to an even more destructive storm.”
Although Takiyuddin did not name individuals, PAS leaders have previously targeted Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, accusing them of actions that allegedly undermine Islam. Meanwhile, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has also clashed with DAP figures over religious matters, including Raub MP Chow Yu Hui’s proposal for a non-Muslim affairs minister.
By calling out the government’s perceived inaction, PAS is positioning itself as a watchdog, pressuring Anwar’s administration to demonstrate its commitment to religious harmony by holding its own members accountable.
