Chief Secretary to the Government: Many civil servants are bankrupt

Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, urged civil servants to spend within their means, warning that the pressure to display social status leads many into excessive debt and bankruptcy. He emphasized the importance of financial discipline, stating, “We should live within our means—if we can afford a Xiaomi smartphone, we shouldn’t try to buy an iPhone.”

He highlighted that some civil servants mismanage personal finances despite handling large government funds. He also stressed adherence to loan deduction regulations and encouraged financial counseling for those in difficulty. Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Malaysian Department of Insolvency pointed out that a “show-off” lifestyle is a key factor in financial troubles among young people.
