Tan Lip-Bu, born in Muar, Malaysia, before Singapore’s 1965 split, became a symbol of Malaysia’s brain drain when he was named Intel’s CEO in 2025. Raised in Singapore and now a naturalized American, the 66-year-old tech titan’s success sparked a tug-of-war between nations. The Singapore Straits Times hailed him as a local who “grew up” in the Lion Republic, while Malaysia’s New Straits Times proudly claimed their “Malaysian-born” star. Yet, Malaysia mourns a lost talent, one of many brilliant minds welcomed by Singapore. A nation left with nostalgia, Malaysia can only boast “born here,” as Singapore thrives and the ringgit falls.
