The government has approved a review of general practitioners’ (GPs) consultation fees, with the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) proposing a minimum fee of RM60. Current fees, ranging from RM10 to RM35, have remained unchanged for 33 years despite rising costs.

MMA President Datuk Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira emphasized the need for periodic adjustments to reflect inflation and operational expenses. The Health Ministry is finalizing discussions, with an announcement expected before May.
The revision aims to ensure private clinics’ financial sustainability while maintaining affordable healthcare access. Strengthening the GP sector could reduce overall healthcare costs by improving patient referrals and minimizing hospital visits.
