A senior PAS leader, Syahir Sulaiman, sparked debate by agreeing to discuss limiting the Malaysian Prime Minister’s tenure to two terms, but only if the position is reserved for Muslims. Citing Islam’s status as the federation’s official religion, the Bachok MP argued the condition was both sensible and necessary. His stance followed DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke’s call for unfulfilled reforms, including term limits and judicial separation. PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi had earlier framed Loke’s suggestion as a minority power grab, prompting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to urge opposition leaders to avoid turning the issue into a racial conflict.
