P Waytha Moorthy, a former minister and Hindu rights activist, has challenged the claim that thousands of demolished Hindu temples in Malaysia, including the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple in Kuala Lumpur, were illegally built on private land. In a letter to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, he argued that British colonial policies sanctioned these temples to attract Indian laborers vital to Malaya’s development, citing historical records from the late 1800s and early 1900s. He highlighted unfulfilled British promises of land ownership, leaving Malaysian Indians landless. Advocates note the temple’s current site was DBKL-ordered, with assurances against demolition until relocation.
