On Sunday, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s western Aceh province, initially reported as 5.4 by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, according to Xinhua. The quake hit at 9:58 a.m. Jakarta time, with its epicenter 16 kilometers northeast of Banda Aceh, at a depth of 12 kilometers. Tremors reached IV MMI in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, III MMI in Takengon, and II-III MMI in Pidie, Pidie Jaya, and Sabang, per agency official Daryono. No tsunami warning was issued, as the quake posed no risk of giant waves. Indonesia’s location on the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it earthquake-prone.
