At the opening of the Vision 2020 time capsule at Kuala Lumpur Tower, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recited a patriotic poem he wrote, stirring emotions among attendees. The poem emphasized the ongoing struggle to build a successful nation, the challenges of post-independence identity, and the historical greatness of the Malay people.
“Tiada ertinya sejarah silam jika bangsa tercinta dipinggir dan dilupakan. Tugas kita bukan kecil kerana mengisi kemerdekaan, rupanya lebih besar dan lebih sukar dari menuntutnya,” katanya penuh emosi.
Despite a hand injury, Mahathir opened the capsule, buried in 1996, which contained symbolic items like photos, RM2 notes, and his poem, reflecting Malaysia’s aspiration to become a developed nation by 2020. Delayed by Covid-19, the event was attended by his wife, former PM Muhyiddin Yassin, and others.
