US Slaps Massive Tariffs on Southeast Asian Solar Products

The US has imposed steep tariffs on solar energy products from Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia—nations that supplied 77% of its solar panel imports in 2024. Tariffs range from 168.8% (Malaysia) to a staggering 3,403.9% (Cambodia), citing unfair subsidies and Chinese firms allegedly dumping products via these countries.

The move, triggered by US solar manufacturers, including First Solar and Hanwha Qcells, could devastate Southeast Asia’s renewable energy exports—Vietnam being hardest hit. Industry insiders warn of rising costs and loss of US market share. A final vote by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) in June will determine if the tariffs stand.
