MARA director-general Datuk Zulfikri Osman clarified that students who have already received financial aid, such as PTPTN loans, are not eligible for MARA sponsorship under its long-standing policy. Addressing concerns from parents of UniSHAMS medical students, Zulfikri said the Tertiary Education Sponsorship Programme (TESP) guidelines clearly prohibit dual sponsorship.
MARA: No Sponsorship for Students with Existing Financial Aid
He emphasized MARA’s priority is to support Bumiputera students without existing aid. Since 1999, MARA has sponsored 423 UniSHAMS students, including 144 in medicine. As of March 31, 4,510 Bumiputera medical students nationwide are under MARA sponsorship. Parents have called on the Prime Minister and MARA to reconsider the current policy.
