The Sarawak government has taken legal action against Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd for allegedly operating illegally at the Miri Crude Oil Terminal without a proper license. A legal notice dated April 30 gave the company 21 days to comply or face penalties. 

Sarawak Sues Petronas Subsidiary Over Illegal Oil Terminal Operations

Sarawak accuses the firm of violating state gas distribution laws and is challenging federal authority under the 1974 Petroleum Development Act. Instead, the state enforces its own 1958 Oil Mining Ordinance. 

Claiming control over 60.87% of Malaysia’s petroleum reserves and 90% of LNG exports, the dispute reportedly prompted ConocoPhillips to withdraw from a major offshore project.
