A former MCA vice-president attributed the party’s declining Chinese support since 2004 to Umno’s arrogance within Barisan Nasional. He highlighted Umno’s 2005 keris-wielding incident, which alienated non-Malays, and the 2006 forced retraction of a religious rights memorandum, souring Chinese voters. He also noted Umno’s 2018 attack on tycoon Robert Kuok, with an unapologetic slur, further estranging the community. “These incidents did not sit well with the Chinese community,” Ti Lian Ker told FMT, adding, “We (MCA) were guilty by association and ended up as collateral damage,” despite MCA’s loyalty to BN amid controversies like 1MDB.
