PETALING JAYA – Malaysian authorities are seeking the extradition of Tim Leissner, a convicted financier implicated in the 1MDB scandal, according to the Wall Street Journal. Malaysia submitted an extradition request to the US Justice Department in August 2024, with Interpol issuing a red notice for the former Goldman Sachs partner in November. Leissner, who pleaded guilty in 2018 to money laundering and bribery, admitted to receiving substantial kickbacks. Awaiting sentencing in the US on May 29, 2025, he faces concerns of fleeing to Germany, his birthplace. Malaysia continues its probe with assistance from Leissner’s former deputy, Roger Ng, recently returned after a US conviction.
