Lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla defended a RM12.5 million legal fee charged to Bersatu for services since 2016, denying it was excessive. Representing Bersatu during its formation and 2018 election success under Pakatan Harapan, Haniff told the High Court his work included advising and vetting candidates. Bersatu claims the services were pro bono from 2016 to 2020. Haniff, who filed a 2021 lawsuit after unpaid invoices, distanced himself from Bersatu post-Sheraton Move, citing betrayal of the public mandate. Another lawyer, Rosli Dahlan, testified that Bersatu, as a new party, expected voluntary legal services without payment.
