Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has warned that U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive global tariff policies will soon backfire, predicting Americans will turn against the strategy within three months.
Mahathir: Trump’s Policies Won’t ‘Make America Great’
In an interview ahead of his 100th birthday, Mahathir criticized Trump’s approach as outdated and irrational, saying his tariffs — including a planned 24% levy on Malaysia — are hurting the U.S. economy. He also took aim at Trump’s broader policies and foreign ambitions, including proposals involving Greenland and the Panama Canal.
Stressing Malaysia’s neutral diplomacy, Mahathir reaffirmed the country’s intention to remain friendly with both the U.S. and China.
