Robert Prevost, a 69-year-old American cardinal, was elected as Pope Leo XIV, the 267th Pope, becoming the first American in the role. Born in Chicago in 1955, Prevost, of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, spent decades as a missionary in Peru, gaining Peruvian nationality. Ordained in 1982, he worked with marginalized communities and served as Bishop of Chiclayo and Archbishop. Appointed cardinal in 2023 by Pope Francis, Prevost’s election by a Francis-dominated conclave reflects his alignment with Francis’s values. As Pope, he praised his predecessor and called for unity, drawing on his Augustinian mission experience.
