Gerik police have cleared a 28-year-old lorry driver of negligence in the death of a male elephant calf on Km80 of the Gerik-Jeli stretch of the East-West Highway. The incident occurred at 2:50 am last Sunday amid foggy conditions and no street lighting. The driver, traveling from Gerik to Jeli, reported a large elephant by the road before the calf suddenly crossed, leading to the fatal collision. A viral video captured the calf’s mother attempting to move the lorry for over five hours, a heartbreaking scene that moved many on social media.
