Political economist Edmund Terence Gomez, chairperson of the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4 Center), has slammed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for renewing MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki’s contract for a third term. Speaking at the launch of his book Misgovernance: Grand Corruption in Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, Gomez called the decision “appalling,” arguing it undermines Anwar’s anti-corruption pledges. Critics, including Gomez, highlight Azam’s alleged inaction in the Sabah corruption scandal involving state leaders. The extension, effective May 13, 2025, has fueled perceptions of broken promises by Pakatan Harapan leaders now in power.
