Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended his decision to forward Najib Razak’s pardon application to the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB), emphasizing every convict’s right to apply. In an Al Jazeera interview, Anwar dismissed claims of political motives, stating, “I’m damned if I do, and damned if I don’t.” He clarified he neither influenced the FTPB nor offered personal views beyond legal advice. In February 2024, Najib’s SRC International sentence was halved to six years, with his fine reduced. Anwar criticised the “obsession” with Najib, urging focus on broader corruption cases and governance restoration.
