Veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin likened PKR’s support for Nurul Izzah Anwar’s deputy presidency bid to Anwar Ibrahim’s 1993 Umno campaign to oust deputy president Abdul Ghafar Baba. In 1993, Anwar, then an Umno vice-president, hesitated to challenge Ghafar, his “father figure,” but gained overwhelming endorsements from Umno divisions nationwide. Ghafar chose not to defend his post, allowing Anwar to ascend uncontested. Kadir noted similar tactics in PKR’s backing of Nurul Izzah against Rafizi Ramli. He urged Malaysians to move beyond post-World War II leaders and identify new prime ministerial candidates.
