Anwar Defends Najib Pardon Process, Slams Critics’ Obsession

KUALA LUMPUR, May 17, 2025 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has firmly denied involvement in the pardon process for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, emphasizing that decisions rest with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Pardons Board. In an Al Jazeera interview, Anwar clarified he only submitted Najib’s review application, as is every prisoner’s right, and rejected claims of political motives. He urged the public to focus on broader corruption cases and restoring judicial independence, rather than fixating on Najib, who is serving a reduced six-year sentence for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.
